What Is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing refers to the hosted services that are delivered through the internet. There are three categories of cloud computing: infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and software as a service (SaaS). Cloud computing can be done privately or publicly; for both, the goal is to increase accessibility to IT services and computing resources. These services can be customized to a business’s exact specifications for maximum efficiency.

Cloud computing infrastructure utilizes hardware and software components to properly implement its services. Think of it as on-demand computing: your resources are available when you need them. You can grant access to client devices so cloud applications and data can be used through the internet remotely. An internet connection links client devices, networks and software applications to your databases and servers. The back end works as a repository by storing data that the front end accesses.

The front and back ends communicate through a central server, which uses protocols to exchange data. Cloud computing depends on virtualization so users can access its services and system.

Types of Cloud Computing Services

Since each company has its own needs, cloud computing can be shaped to better suit its goals. The three types of general service delivery categories of cloud computing are below:

  • IaaS. IaaS provides essential resources on demand for storage, networking and computing. It uses virtual server storage and application programming interfaces to allow its users to move their workload to a virtual machine. Servers are leased or rented by clients to allow them to store and compute via the cloud. A client only pays for the resources that they use, encouraging efficient IT resource usage.
  • PaaS. PaaS models use development tools that are hosted on their infrastructures. Users can access the tools using APIs on the internet. This type of cloud computing is used for software development since the providers typically host the software once it’s developed.
  • SaaS. SaaS delivers software applications, or web services, through the internet. By accessing these SaaS applications from anywhere via an internet connection. A few examples are Microsoft 365 and email services, which users can use from any location using their devices.
